Who knew I could get such amazing clumps from a $2.99 32 oz. tub of gel?? It doesn’t provide enough hold for my waves but it sure makes up for it in the clumping area! What’s odd about this gel is that the consistency doesn’t lead you to believe that it will produce clumps; it’s sticky, thick, and isn’t the best at distribution until you add a bit of water, smooth and scrunch away.

I read the two biggest threads on the general forum about this gel and despite the dirt cheap price tag, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to add a mondo tub of gel that I wasn’t entirely sure would work for my hair to my product stash. A coupon in the mail for 20% off your entire purchase from Sally Beauty quickly changed my mind. (Unfortunately, I didn’t let the PJ run amok in the store and I walked away with the gel, one cake eyeliner, and a yummy banana scented lotion). With protein in the ingredients list, I wasn’t expecting much when using the product over time as most protein-containing gels result in strawlike hair when used for more than a week. However, I’ve been using ecostyler for over a week with no protein overload symptoms yet!

On Tuesday I cowashed with vo5, conditioned with aohr, used about a dime’s worth of kbb milk as a leave in, applied about 3 half dollars’ of ecostyler with water, and topped it off with chi infra gel for extra hold. My hair was soft, super clumpy, and frizz free despite a dewpoint of 62 and 84% humidity. I even had one of our office techs ask if I had recently permed my hair since it looked much wavier. Yesterday I used kbb super silky in lieu of the nectar and my waves were even tighter!! Lest it just be a fluke due to reintroducing AOHR into my routine, I used Aura cherry almond bark conditioner followed by kbb super silky as a leave in again and was rewarded with chunky, clumpy waves again. Ecostyler is a keeper!

Today’s warm, muggy weather would normally lead me to have my hair up by midday, that is, unless I used seamollient mixed 50:50 with my homemade FSG!! The combo was amazing! Defined, soft, frizz free waves and curls with amazing body and hold. I’m in love with it! I took some pictures but they just don’t do it justice. The day was quite windy and of course I had to enjoy the weather with my windows down as I was driving; despite the wind, my waves still look great and the minor frizz is nothing a little smoothing with cream or butter couldn’t fix. Today’s routine was a water wash which I rarely do, condition with kbb milk mixed with aloeba, my homemade fsg, plop, and 2 dimes of curls princess glaze prior to diffusing.

I’ve been using Avalon Organics’ CoQ10 wrinkle defense night cream as an eye cream for the past 2 weeks and have to say that I’m pretty impressed. Although I was a bit wary about possible pore clogging from the dimethicone and the fact that it’s a cream, I haven’t had any problems so far but I’m keeping my fingers crossed!!! The fine lines I’ve noticed seem to have diminished and my eye area feels nice and hydrated. My eyes aren’t irritated nor does the cream make makeup application difficult.

I spent the weekend at my SO’s mom’s house and took my VO5 cowash, kbb milk, kbb super silky, curls princess glaze and sebastian hi contrast gel along for the weekend away. I’ve only used the princess glaze once before and without a hard holding gel on top so I was interested to see how it would hold up. I’ve never really tried too hard to make my hair look good when I’m away since enjoying the time with family or sightseeing is the main goal. SoCal weather has been pretty dreary as of late and the past weekend was no exception. We had a bit of drizzle on the way over and grey clouds pretty much defined the weather for the entire weekend. With gloomy weather and knowing that I don’t have much luck with good hair days away from home, I was pretty much anticipating blah hair days.  Well, luck must have been on my side because this combination worked very well! I had great boosting, definition, NO frizz, and great wave definition!

In skincare news, I’ve been using GoW’s lemony mint cleanser in the mornings and have to say that it’s just alright. It’s a non-foaming cleanser marketed for the oily, blemish-prone  gals and while I haven’t experienced any breakouts, I can’t say that I’m bowled over either. I purchased another sample to figure out my true feelings about the product and I still feel like it’s a good cleanser but not a great one.

My last order included a sample of the base cream sans wax and I must say it feel pretty nice. I spritz my face after applying my serums and HA+oil, spritz my hand holding about 1/2 dime’s worth of the cream and apply. My skin absorbs this cream quite readily and without any greasy feeling. My current oil blend is a mix of squalene and cranberry seed oil. I’m not sure how I feel about the squalene oil; it doesn’t appear to be clogging my pores but it still feels a bit heavier than I’d prefer. My mix is probably a 9:1 ratio of squalene to cranberry so I think the next time I use squalene, I’ll use a lighter hand.

Yesterday I tried out GoW’s majik lockes all on its own with my homemade FSG (now with seamollient!) on top and a wee bit of mop top for extra hold after plopping. Despite the freak weather we’ve been having (thunderstorms, occasional drizzle, and dewpoints 50+), my hair was pretty good! One of my sisters even asked if I had recently gotten a trim because my hair looked shorter – yay shrinkage! There was a bit of frizz and I’m more than likely to attribute it to the protein in the majik lockes. It’s something I definitely want to continue experimenting with but the cost makes me think twice about considering it for the long run.

Today’s hair is courtesy of a cowash, kbb milk rinse out, kbb nectar, donna marie honey and aloe curling jelly, and mop top as a finisher. My hair looks great! There isn’t as much shrinkage as Tuesday and Wednesday’s hair, but there is great wave definition, boosting, and hold with a tad less frizz. Unfortunately, the jelly was recently discontinued. More info can be found here and here. It’s a shame because I’m really impressed by the gel. My hair is quite picky when it comes to products containing aloe so finding one that works is like finding a needle in a haystack.

I received my most recent GoW order (with seamollient, veggie hair serum, majik lockes in apple blossom and the healthy hair serum amongst other things) yesterday. Yay!

This a.m. I added about an oz. of seamollient to my latest batch of FSG and I think it helped a lot with the consistency; I add some oils (Oyin after bath oil), mag sulfate, citric acid, honey and agave nectar, and xanthan gum to my flax seeds (50:50 of brown and golden flax) and while the consistency is akin to that of biotera gel, the seamollient helped thicken it a bit more.

I scrunched in about a half dollar’s worth of the majik lockes and felt a bit concerned since my hair absorbed it so well. I scrunched in some kbb nectar, my fsg + seamollient and topped it off with some mop top after plopping.

When I SOTC I immediately fell in love with how my hair looked. Nicely defined and bouncy waves with great root lift! My wave pattern looks even tighter than in my avatar – something I’ve been noticing when I usee kbb + fsg. My hair feels really soft but the fsg+ seamollient and mop top gave me a good amount of crunch. By the end of the day the wave definition and hold hadn’t decreased but there was a bit of frizz showing. I’ll have to try the combo out tomorrow since today was a co-poo day.

Yup, despite the ultra-moisturizing feel and the fact that it’s listed as low-protein on the Curl Junkie website, my hair felt a bit rough and was noticeably frizzy yesterday. I thought it may be due to having only a little bit of fsg left to use but I don’t think the mop top or cj smoothing gellie have ever made my hair feel rough and dry. It’s a shame since I was pretty pleased with the results the day before yesterday. However, I don’t plan on writing the CJ theory conditioner off. No, if anything, I’ll just rotate it with a protein-free conditioner. Maybe I’ll even give their curl assurance conditioner a shot despite the amodimethicone.

Rather than tempt the hair gods today by trying to rule out the protein in cj theory, I co-poo’d with alaffia and aloeba (need to use it up somehow!), rinsed out kbb milk, scrunched in about a nickel’s worth of kbb super silky and topped it all off with homemade fsg and two dimes of moptop after plopping. I was suprised by the consistency of the super silky – it seemed almost creamier than the nectar and it definitely lingered on my hands after scrunching it in. Comparing the ingredients of the nectar (Purified Water, Grapeseed Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Vegetable Wax, Panthenol, Yucca Extract, Horsetail Extract, Nettle Extract, Melissa Extract, Essential and/or Fragrance Oil, Vitamin E and Natural Enzymes) vs super silky (Purified Water, Aloe Vera Juice, Vegetable Wax, Coconut Oil, Arnica Extract, Jojoba Oil, Panthenol, Organic Rosemary Hydrosol & Vitamin E)  there are heavier oils in the latter which may account for the heavier feel and creamier texture.

I was less than a little enthused after scrunching in the ss, fsg and mop top so imagine my amazement when I SOTC to get nice, airy, defined, boosted, waves! Waves that are tighter than they are in my “About” picture! Yay!

I’m really pleased with homemade fsg. I made a new batch last night and ended up with about 28 oz. However, it’s always fun to tinker with products so after reading this thread on NC.com, I ordered some seamollient to try adding to my fsg.

Creative title. Yes, I’ve been pretty bad with the updates but there’s a bit of a lull at work now so I thought to update.

Again, there aren’t any pictures and my descriptions are brief but I just haven’t found the time.

Two weeks ago I decided that AOHR was too heavy for the mild temps we’ve been having here in SoCal so I broke open my bottle of devacare one c. The texture is nice and creamy and it smells (to me) like orangesicles. In the shower, I was surprised that small amounts help detangle like a dream and provide the right amount of moisture for me upon rinsing out. That being said, I probably won’t repurchase as I’m none too fond of DevaCurl’s practices as evidenced in Jillipoo’s blog and the NC.com forums nor am I fond of the brushing off  Miss Massey gave. I would think it extremely unprofessional, if not illegal by FDA standards, to mislabel products just to save some cash/trees by printing new ones. Not only that, but if your products and philosophy helped to “revolutionize” the curly hair industry, wouldn’t you think it incumbent upon you to ensure that you aren’t misleading nor alienating your customers?

The past few days I’ve been dealing with less than stellar hair due to a run in with a GOD AWFUL gel by the name of got2b spiked up. Not only does it smell like embalming fluid but its ingredients probably match: Aqua Water , VP/VA Copolymer , Glycerin , PVP , Carbomer , Oleth-20 , Aminomethyl Propanol , Panthenol , Benzophenone-4 , Disodiium EDTA , DMDM Hydantoin , Parfum Fragrance , Butylphenyl Methylpropional , Linalool , Hexyl Cinnamal , CI 42090 Blue 1. Absolutley NOTHING natural in here except for the water and glycerin which, heck, you can find in a ton of other gels. I only used it twice and just had to chuck it; I wouldn’t even let my SO try to use it up it was that horrendous. Since then, my hair has been stringy and frizzy so I’ve been toying with some of my natural product samples from kathymack in hopes of returning my hair to its normal state.

In line with the title of my post, I’m pretty much copying and pasting product combinations and results from my Outlook notes albeit with a little bit of spackle to hide the bare bones of it all.
